From a student to teacher of music

Teaching young children has helped me not only understand myself but be more understanding with myself as a result. Every child learns in a different manner, and spending time listening to my students, trying out different approaches, and figuring out what works best for them has allowed me to discover the different ways I engage and experiment with my music. Teaching has also taught me the importance of letting go and trusting the process with which a child learns and absorbs. It has forced me to trust my own processes more - whether it is with a composition I can’t figure out, or with a performance I was unhappy with. Moreover, having to explain vocal/piano technique to children has helped me get a deeper understanding of my own voice and body — I am more aware of how I play and sing; having to simplify and explain concepts has not only helped me articulate myself better but interact more confidently with my audience during a performance. Teaching has become another medium to explore my music through - it allows me to step out of myself and reexamine my music with fresh eyes.
